General questions
Q: URLChaser seems pretty simple. Convince me why I should spend money on it.
A: We'll
try, and we'll try to be brief. What must be set first is
the scenario: Mass web content - you have found a lot
of the stuff you are interested in. Now what is
the difference between having and not having URLChaser?.. TIME
URLChaser will save unbelievable amounts of time.
The benefit-light:
Ergonomize and
speed up your browsing of mass web content by using the
URLChaser file as a "navigation menu".
The benefit-supreme: Feed
your URLChaser file to an offline browser. You will be mass-downloading in
minutes!
Sample scenario An
eNewspaper published its movie reviews on pages ordered by dates. With
URLChaser, we churned out the pages for the whole year, then fed the HTML
file to an offline browser [WebCopier].
We were
downloading in less than two minutes.
. The
individual reviews were NOT linked to each other . There was no "all
our movie reviews"-page from which all reviews could be
reached
Imagine achieving a complete download without URLChaser: You would spend HOURS, perhaps in sessions over a couple of DAYS! With URLChaser, we were bringing the content home in less than two minutes.

Q: Why doesn't URLChaser have a download function?
A: A design choice made by us. There are several
downloaders available already. We have opted to provide a specialized
function hard to find elsewhere, and to provide it at a low cost.
Expanding the specification to downloading not only brings us into competition with fine products existing already, but would also significantly raise the cost of the URLChaser application.

Questions concerning the DEMO Edition
For detailed information about how to use URLChaser - consult the online Help Web available on the Resources page
Q: Why
must I download a new file when registering URLChaser? Is there a way
I can unlock the DEMO with the registry code?
A: A very good question from a buyer's perspective. No,
you can not enter the serial code into the DEMO Edition of URLChaser. You
must uninstall the DEMO and install the new file you recieve when registering - then supply your registry code to the latter.
The reasons for us not building
an 'unlocking' capability into the DEMO Edition are several, but
two are more important:
1) Security. If the ability to 'unlock' the URLChaser
DEMO does not exist inside the program, the program becomes more difficult
to hack. As it is, even if someone hacked it, URLChaser DEMO
would re-create its time-limitation as soon as it was started
again.
2) Registered user benefit.
The current URLChaser DEMO is version 1.0
of the application (and will probably remain so until we deliver URLChaser 2). But development is constantly being made. When downloading your registered copy you can be sure you always receive the latest update.

Questions concerning purchase and registration
For ordering details - consult the Order page
Q: I
provided my personal information when I purchased URLChaser - why must I
create an account online to become a registered user?
A: Again, a very good question from a
buyer's perspective. True, the registering process is a tad cumbersome - that
we acknowledge in full. The reason, as you may expect, is to discourage piracy
and illegal copying.
There
are a lot of non paid-for URLChaser's out
there. Pirates though, cannot create accounts. The online account is our way
of giving benefits only to those who got URLChaser the proper
way.
The process works as follows:
At the time of purchase, you provide
your information and receive the serial key code and the application. Your
information is stored with us, waiting to be matched by you
when you go online to activate your account.
By activating your account after your purchase, you are identifying yourself as a user who have received URLChaser the proper way.
All in all, it is like the ancient practice of braking clay tablets in two parts: When you meet a guy carrying a fragment, you test it with your own fragment. If they fit, you trust the carrier.

Questions about offline browsers
NOTE We rarely provide detailed information about
offline browsers and recommend you refer to the manufacturer instead.
When we do discuss offline browsers, we refer to WebCopier. Even though we
consider WebCopier to be a fine product, our choice is arbitrary, and
URLChaser development is not associated with WebCopier or any other
application manufactured by others.
Q: Is
there anything I should keep in mind when getting an offline
browser (considering I want to use URLChaser with it)?
A: Not really. The
only thing we can think of is the offline browser's handling of local paths -
When you provide an URLChaser HTML file to an offline
browser, you provide the file's address on your computer - that is, you
provide a path and not a hyperlink (URL).
The
offline browser thus have to accept local paths as input. Try demos, or
ask the manufacturer. The bottom line: Local paths are such a
trivial/fundamental part of any Windows system, that an application unable
to handle them must solemnly be declared sub-standard. We've tested URLChaser with WebCopier, which handles local paths perfectly. _to top
Q: When
using an URLChaser file, the offline browser downloads the file
but not the pages linked to - why?
A: Most probably your
offline browser is set to download from the "first-/original-/starting
server only" (setting have different name in different offline
browsers).
When using an URLChaser file, your own computer is
the "starting server". Therefore, you must set the offline browser to
download from "All servers" [WebCopier's name for the
setting].
Setting the above, means the offline browser will
begin crawling your local URLChaser file, then continue out on the web to
retrieve the material listed by the file. _to top
Problems running URLChaser
Q: URLChaser won't start - what's going on here!?!
Most likely, your system has
insufficient support for URLChaser's Media Player. URLChaser launches the
player at start-up, and if the player does not work, URLChaser will not
start.
Media Player
Requirements Your system must harbour
version 6.4 of the Windows Media Player. The file is named mplayer2.exe. Further, the player's
supporting control, msdxm.ocx must
be present (usually in the System or System32 folders).
Windows may harbour files
with similar names. Make sure to search for these files and none other. If
found, alt-click the file, select Properties / Version to find out
its version number.
Windows 98SE/ME/2000 did contain the 6.x player,
but Windows 98 original edition did
not. Thus, an original 98 system must have the Second
Edition update to be able run URLChaser.
Further, several upgrades
of Internet Explorer has contained the 6.x player. If you have
Internet Explorer 5 or higher, the 6.x player should already be present on
your machine.
Download version 6.4 of Windows
Media Player at Microsoft Media.
NOTES Player 6.4 is standalone from other versions
of the player. To ensure smooth running, you should have it installed
regardless of whether you already
have later versions.
a. The 6.4
player is (in part) made for embedding (in applications such as
URLChaser, for example). It has proved stable and reliable.
b. Installing the 6.4 player will not
harm or remove later versions. Converesly, installing a later version will not harm or remove
the 6.4 player. As stated above the player 6 is standalone, and will remain
on your system for other purposes, while you may enjoy the full benefits
of your new player. _to top
